approaching the edge of the world.

February 7, 2007

the first thing i noticed about sweden was how little i knew about it. gamla stan, stockholm.ask me about london or paris or sevilla or rome or new york and i’ll have something to say, but stockholm leaves me with more questions than answers. thankfully, i don’t think i’m alone in that thought; most people’s perceptions of swedes likely reverts back to the classic stereotypes of tall, blond-haired, blue-eyed men and women who long for nothing than a plate of meatballs and a dash in the sauna after a day of shopping at ikea.

i know that sweden was a regional juggernaut for several centuries, before it offended imperial russia, sparking a war that would strip it of its local power. i also think that it was a major player in the hanseatic league, something else which i know embarrassingly little about.

maybe that’s why stockholm is so beautiful. mystery always keeps one interested.
